What Is the Device Automation Bus (DAB)?
Witbe |
The new DAB open protocol is redefining how devices are remotely controlled—co-developed by industry leaders: Amazon, Google, and Netflix. Witbe is integrating the DAB protocol to enhance its video testing and monitoring capabilities, reinforcing its commitment to open standards and smarter QA workflows.
What Is DAB?
The Device Automation Bus (DAB) is an open-source, cross-platform protocol created by Amazon, Google (YouTube), and Netflix to standardize remote device control.
Its purpose? To give developers, testers, and QA engineers a reliable way to automate actions on consumer video devices —from Smart TVs to gaming consoles.
With DAB, you can:
- Launch and close applications
- Send key commands (like a remote)
- Change the device settings
- Access playback and app metadata
- Collect performance metrics
DAB introduces a standardized way to control supported devices across brands and ecosystems—complementing existing protocols and reducing the need for device-specific configurations in some cases.
Why It Matters for Video QA and Streaming
Testing video devices has always involved a range of control protocols—from IR and Bluetooth to custom APIs—each of which Witbe has integrated and optimized over time. Witbe engineering teams have long handled the diversity of these device control methods, ensuring consistent test execution regardless of protocol.
DAB adds a new standardized option to this toolkit, offering native device control and telemetry across supported platforms. That means:
- Fast test setup across different brands
- Reliable automation, even on complex devices
- Easy scaling of QA workflows across international teams
In some cases, DAB simplifies device control by allowing QA teams to focus less on setup and more on what really matters: can their users actually use their video services?
Witbe’s Role in the DAB Ecosystem
At the 2025 YouTube Device Partner Summit in Tokyo, Witbe was the first company to publicly demonstrate DAB in action. Our live demo featured a mosaic of smart TVs and streaming devices, all orchestrated through our monitoring platform.
Witbe demonstrated that it could add DAB support to any DAB compatible device. By leveraging the bridge feature of the standard, Witbe also plans to implement DAB support to any non-DAB legacy devices like : Android TV, Roku, Fire TV, and more.
By integrating DAB into our monitoring stack, we extend the value of our:
- Witbox robots (controlling real devices)
- Remote Eye Controller (REC) (managing remote access)
- Smartgate (analyzing test and monitoring results)
It’s not just support—it’s full integration.
What’s Next for DAB?
At Witbe, we see DAB as part of a larger industry shift toward open standards, smarter tools, and deeper collaboration.
Our support for DAB goes beyond simple compatibility—it’s a strategic step toward a more unified, open, and scalable future for real-device video monitoring.
What if all your devices could speak the same language?
We’ve been working on making this a reality for many years, and we’re thrilled that other companies share that vision.
